As flying dutchman said, 2wd saves gas, but therer is more...

The Audi's, Subaru's and Skyline's are not 4x4's that are engaged all the time as you stated......these cars are classified as "AWD"..... This means that these cars are 2wd unless the other wheels need the power or start slipping.

The benefit of having a true 4wd system is that you can engage all 4 wheels whenever you want. An AWD system will only power all 4 wheels when it is needed...
